I’m back home and finally recovering from my time in Detroit where I attended the NAIAS on the press days. It was an interesting show in the sense that some of the cars were actually a surprise.

Kinja'd!!!

Normally I dislike surprises but when they work out, they can really be nice. Take in point this little beauty that unexpectedly showed up and was perhaps the best in show, from the concept category.

Kinja'd!!!

I apologize for the crappy quality of some of my photos: they’re taken with an old phone that has a crappy camera, sorry.

In pictures, by the pros, this thing is pretty and it looks just as good in person. I hope most of you will go and see it or it makes it too your local car show. It deserves to be seen and maybe even built?

The two traditional heavy weights went toe to toe, literally they were right across from each other, and it was interesting to watch: the two camps stayed on their respective sides and occasionally flung dirty and dismissive looks at the other, but that was it. The real funny moments happened when the Japanese, Koreans and Germans came strolling on by.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Any guesses on who that is in the khakis and brown corduroy jacket?

I think the Cadillac looks better. They both have presence but the interior nod goes to Lincoln. I’m not sure either will make a dent in the sales of Mercedes, BMW or Audi, yet.

Something that might take a bite out of Mercedes sales was this beauty from Lexus, the LC500.

Kinja'd!!!

Sorry once again for the photo, I couldn’t get the assholes in from to move and then some Lexus executives showed up and got in the way.

The LC500 is awesome though and while maybe not in exactly the same category, I would pick this and park it in my drive way before I even thought about the S Class Coupe or any of the MB two seaters.

One of the surprises of the show was Toyota. Yes, Toyota, the people who make the car business a symptom of Narcolepsy. I swear every time I see a Corolla or Camry I just fall asleep uncontrollably.

Toyota brought some fun and innovation to Cobo Hall and eased the fetish itch I wrote about earlier here !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Of all the manufacturers, Toyota is the one who may satisfy my desire. I would have never thought that.

Just a few fun photos I took.

Overall the show was kind of subdued. There was something missing and some of the usual and expected thunder was clearly stolen by the CES show the week earlier.

What was great and really doesn’t get much media play was the interactions and words spoken by all of the CEO’s, VP’s and executives that attended the show. Once again this year we all complained about the weather, the city and the venue but Detroit still is the center of the universe when it comes to cars in America.

And once again the people of Detroit proved that they are the salt of the Earth type that many others around the nation try to and claim to be. From the very top of the organization who build and manage the NAIAS right down to the cleaning staff who make sure the place is top notch all the time, Detroit can be proud of it’s citizens and comforted in the knowledge that they do the city of Detroit, State of Michigan and the entire nation proud.

I was kind of interested in this, until the spokesman announced that they had no plans for production.

As it sits as this concept, no. But a 2 door coupe in the future, I would bet on it.

I think I just figured out why the new face of the Lincoln looks odd to me! They moved the hood line for this refresh. It used to match up with the window line. They should have either kept it there, or moved it down to match the character line down the rest of the car. It’s like they didn’t try to match the new face to the rest of the car. I don’t think the fact that the front of the car is rather round, while the body itself is pretty chunky and straight edged is helping it, either.

Anyway, I really enjoyed your write up! I used to go to the Detroit auto show with my dad every year, but we haven’t gone for the last few years. It’s cool to see how the show has progressed.

The thing that I noticed was that almost all the concept cars had their front seatbelts built into the seats.

I was benchmarking seatbelts today
